Agios Nikolaos can be used as a great base to explore Lasithi prefecture and visit places like the nearby Elounda and Spinalonga, Istron, Kalo xorio, Ammoudara on the east side and Malia, Hersonissos, Stalida, Heraklion and Knossos on the west side. You can start early from Agios Nikolaos between 08:00 and 09:00 (service ends at 10:15) to Pachia Ammos at the church of Agios Christophers. Then, you will continue east and you will reach the Monastery of Toplos with its famous winery. Then, the beach at Vai or Finikodasos (palm forest)\u00a0 will leave you amazed by its beauty.<\/p>

However, if at some point you want some kind of privacy, the beach of Ermoupolis is just a few kilometers away.
After your visit to Archaiological site of Itanos you can go up the hill to the west and a beach awaits you which is mostly almost deserted.<\/p>

Also, a visit to Laimos is a must. If you are lucky you will see the waves in the opposite direction almost merging.
For food you can choose a tavern in Kouremenos or Palekastro. Then on the way back you can possibly stop at Platanos with the wonderful view to isla of Psira or you can stop at Kavoussi where you can find a couple of good bakeries.
