With your rental car you can explore the area around and you can go to the beaches the majority of which has sand or fine pebbles. Skotino Cave which is said to be one of the most spectacular caves, 160 meters deep and 36 meters wide. The findings of the cave are told to be dated back to the Minoan period.

Nearby excursions are Malia which is also a famous arhaiological site, Hersonissos where Lyhnostatis museum and Labirynth are located. Next is Stalis with the large beach and full of entertainment. Another trip is in Hereklion. There you can visit the Archaeological Museum or other museums, galleries and then go shopping in Heraklion. You can also visit of Knossos Palace which is a must. Lasithi plateau via Stalis, Mohos, Krasi and monastery of Kera to Zeus cave and down hill the way to Agios Nikolaos is another excursion which will give you the view of east and west side of Diktis mountains. Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and Spinalonga island with the guided boat trip is another visit worth having.
