Maleme is small seaside village 158km away from Heraklion airport and 18km from Chania. It has a beautiful beach made of fine pebbles and a few big hotels and apartments and studios close to the beach for those who wish to rent. It is a quiet place in comparison to the crowded and more touristic Agia Marina and Platanias which is close by but it covers all the basic needs for food and entertainment. Maleme was a WW2 army airport and it is well known for the German cemetery of the paratroopers who invaded Crete in 1941 and died during the attack and is located a little bit further from the village on the hills above Maleme.

Maleme is a quite place for family holidays but it is a fantastic base to also explore and enjoy the island starting from west side at Kastelli Kissamos where you can anjoy the boat trip to Gramvousa island and Balos Lagune. Falasarna beach, Sfinari and Elafonisi makefor another day trip with fantastic views. Another day you can visit Sougia, Palaiochora and Elafonisi. Of course it is a must to visit Chania city with the old Venetian port and the picturesque old town and also other places all around Chania. Kalyves, Almyrida and the surrounding area including Georgioupolis is another enjoyable day trip.
